Abstract
The paper compares the use of commas in modern Japanese and Russian, with special attention paid to the way these prototypical punctuation marks collocate with particular syntactic categories and words. The Japanese punctuation appears to be more systematic than it is usually believed, though some of its syntactic rules must be fundamentally different from the common Russian patterns. Despite a clear trend for a similar approach being applied to both punctuation systems, the Russian one tends to feature more bound, “fossilized” use of commas while commas in Japanese still have more syntactic freedom.
