  • Other en Shirasu are volcanic deposits. For the rational study of building foundations, an adequate knowledge of in-situ "Shirasu"'s physical properties is a prerequisite. In this paper an experimental study of loading tests on "Shirasu" is described. The ultimate purpose of this study is to present data on the bearing capacity of a design for foundations. The following experiments were performed; (1) Behavior and frictional strength between the “Shirasu” and buried model piles. (2) Displacement of the circumferential ground in which model piles were buried. The measured values were analyzed by the finite element method. The results can be summarized as follows; (1) There is more than 2kg/cm^2 for frictional strength between "Shirasu" and the model piles of cement mortar. (2) The circumferential ground of “Shirasu" and the immediate settlements made by vertical loading tests behave elastically by analysis with the finite element method. However, the problem of how to deal with creep displacement by loading tests remains as a furture work.
