  • Other 本稿では、天理教が北米において組織的な伝道活動を開始し急激な伸展を見た1920年代末から1930年代にかけての期間に注目し、アメリカ本土の日経移民社会における天理教の展開とその特徴について明らかにしようと試みている。　戦前の天理教アメリカ伝道は、1920年代、1930年代に見られた教団としての海外伝道促進の動きと当時の日系移民社会の政治的、経済的、社会的背景が重なり合って、十数年という短い期間に急速な伸展を遂げることになった。伝道に従事した布教師やその活動形態は多様であり、既存の主流宗教であった日系キリスト教や仏教の代わりとなる存在として日系移民社会へ参入していったことが特徴と考えられる。　これまで天理教の北米伝道史を扱った文献や日系移民社会における諸宗教に関する研究は少なくないが、戦前の天理教アメリカ伝道を日系移民社会の歴史的、社会的、宗教的文脈で読み解くことにより、本稿は当時の天理教伝道の様相と日系移民社会の宗教文化を異なる側面から描き出している。
  • Other This paper aims to clarify the development and characteristics of Tenrikyo within the Japanese immigrant society in the mainland U.S., focusing on the period from the late 1920s through the 1930s during which Tenrikyo launched an organized mission and achieved a rapid progress in North America. Tenrikyo's pre-war mission in America made a rapid advance within a dozen years or so thanks to the Chuech's increased momentum toward overseas mission during the 1920s and 1930s, coupled with political, economic, and social factors of the Japanese immigrant society in the mainland U.S. Tenrikyo missionaries and followers with diverse backgrounds engaged in and developed varipus forms of activities. Tenrikyo also made its way into the Japanese immigrant society by serving as an alternative to the existing dominant religions, that is, Christianity and Buddhism. These are considered as the characteristics of Tenrikyo. There are a number of publications about the history of Tenrikyo's North American mission and a number of studies on Japanese religions in the Japanese immigrant society. Through reexamining the pre-war Tenrikyo mission in the historical, social and religious context of the Japanese immigrant society, however, this paper attempts to provide a new perspective on the Tenrikyo mission and religious cultures of the immigrant society at the time.
