Description
  • Abstract en In the studies of Greek ethics it is still contested whether oiktos, the joint feeling of lament and compassion, would normally generate actions of the pitier. This paper aims to analyse the relationship between that feeling and the action of him and appraise the effect of that feeling enacted in Greek tragedy. It focuses on several scenes of supplication for there the relationship of the pitier and the recipient of pity is clear, and examines if the supplicated acts out of that feeling or otherwise. As a result we will see that oiktos was often used by suppliants as a means to getting help, but it is usually other elements that decide the actions of the supplicated party. Here we can glimpse their general idea that it was not advisable to take an action through the bare feeling of oiktos.
