The purpose of this article is to elucidate the function of the proclitic particle, č, in modern Mongolian by observing its behaviors in negative contexts. The particle, which is called focalizer, has been given the explanation of relating the preceding word to another contrastive word in a positive discourse. A close examination shows that č keeps some steady base in negative contexts though it combines with various constituents, such as noun phrases, interrogatives, and adverbs. The article will specify what the base is in terms of the relationship between focalization and negative operators.
