  • Other en Mohr-Coulomb's failure criterion for brittle materials is based on resistance to friction. Generally, the failure of materials can be explained by this criterion, but this does not completely describe the failure for brittle matelials, because their failure is caused by tensile fracture. Therefor, it would be better if the failure criterion for the brittle materials is established by the condition of tensile fracture. Thus, a “plane quantity" was assumed for the failure criterion for brittle materials, and it was calculated by the state of stress under the condition of Griffith's failure criterion. Failure caused by compound stress was analyzed. Applying the “plane quantity", the state of the triaxial compression tests on “Shirasu" were analyzed by the finite element method, and the calculated results were compared with the experimental results. The failure of the biaxial and the triaxial state of stress can be explained from the calculation based on the “plane quantity".
