Abstract
en
In an earlier paper (Yamashita [2016]) I proposed the need for adeictic and contextual approach in Japanese syntax. In this paper Ianalyze two similar Japanese expressions: DAKE and SHIKA~NAI.Contextual use means that an expression needs to be interpreted withrespect to a reference point in order to be understood appropriately. Useof DAKE presupposes that the noun which it follows is part of a whole, which must be understood as its reference point. In other words Dake isa contextual expression. By contrast SHIKA~NAI has a connotationthat the noun or quantifier which it follows is a small amount or number. This is to say, it is a deictic expression because its use is based on thespeaker’s viewpoint. If the speaker thinks that the amount or numberinvolved is small, SHIKA~NAI can be used. Moreover both theseexpressions, contextual and deictic, can co-occur in the same sentence:Henry DAKE SHIKA tesuto-wo ukeNAKATTA.Finally I claim that these two viewpoints are necessary in variousareas of Japanese syntax and suggest that the approach may be effectivein analyzing WA- and non WA-sentences, or NODA- and non NODAsentences.
