『内外旗章便覧』はアジア、ヨーロッパ、アフリカ、北米、南米の五部構成で、国内外の国旗・国章・軍艦旗・商船旗などの旗章を彩色で紹介している。制作年代は不詳だが、明治初期と想定される。アジアの部に、俗に「左御紋」と称される巴紋が「琉玖(球)国旗」として描かれている。巴紋は尚王家の家紋であるが、天皇家の家紋である十六弁八重表菊紋(菊花紋章)が国章に準じた扱いを受けているのと同様に、王国時代に巴紋は琉球国の国章のように見なされていた。中国や大和に派遣される進貢船や楷船の帰属国を示す船舶旗として、この巴紋の旗章が多く用いられていた。

This book collects some flags arranged into five parts: Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, and South America. It introduces national flags and emblems, and naval and civil ensigns of Japan and other countries in color. Its date of production is unknown but assumed to be in the early Meiji era. In the Asia section, the <i>tomoe</i> crest, popularly known as hidarigumun, identifies the "flag of Ryukyu”. The kikukamonshō (a sixteen-petals, eightfold chrysanthemum crest) represents Japanese emperor's family, in this manner, the <i>tomoe</i> was the crest of the royal Shō family and was regarded as the emblem during the Ryukyu Kingdom. This crest on the flags of the tribute ships was often used to be the symbol of Ryukyu’s subordinate position to China and Yamato (Japan).
